Two years ago, I ventured to San Juan Del Sur(f) to Chica Brava for the first time. Why Nicaragua and why Chica Brava? After contemplating and researching girls surfing blogs, sites, and camps on the internet, I was led to finding the right company for the experience I wanted to have and in a hidden gem of a country for surfing.
In a male-dominated sport, it is important for girls to have the platform to open communication, sharing of experiences, empowerment, and a source of surfing knowledge. All of which I had found participating in a retreat at Chica Brava. In our daily lives, it really is helpful to our surfing to get into the thick of it and read into the gear specs, board styles, accessories that make your life easier, issues concerning our waters, role models that have been paving the way for change, and learn more than we had known before.
A well-studied, connected, or engaged surfer makes a smart surfer. These links below will help you find sources that can empower, inform, and advise you along your surfing journey.
- My go-to is our very own Chica Brava for posts more tailored to my interests and needs. It has a blog page on the official website and on our Facebook page where you can stay tuned for Nicaraguan news, surfing tips/tricks/common FAQs, and the latest surfing news.
- Surfline and Magicseaweed are not only great resources for checking the conditions at local and international surf breaks, but there’s much more. You can look here for news stories, videos, “wave of the day”s, photos at different locations, “sequences of the day”, gear buying guides, as well as travel prep tips and guides.
- GirlsSurfNetwork is an awesome platform for girls to connect about surfing and focus on grassroots, professional, innovative, competitive, and free surfers. This site features journalism, marketing, film, photography, ocean sciences, nutrition, travel, health, female surf history, surf coaching, and fitness.
- One of the best: SurfGirlMagazine. Be the first to know of the new surf film debuts, check out their surf boutique, guides to everything imaginable (board, wetsuits, gifts for surfer girls, trips, camps), know when and where competitions are happening, good eats and workouts, and follow some of the most inspiring women and organizations out there.
- SurferToday features the latest news from the world of wave sports, including surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, bodyboarding, skimboarding, wakeboarding, also articles on surf travel and environment. It has the latest innovations, products, training tips, surf cams, a shark map, instructables (like what to do when stuck inside on a HUGE set, or How to catch waves…), books to read, and news of what is going on in the surf scene.
- Follow the top women surfers as they compete through the year and view their competition heats and videos on the World Surf League website. You can check out rankings, schedules of competitions, and even put together a “fantasy team” of your favorite surfers!
- The Inertia is part of my daily habits on the interwebs. There is always unique and interesting topics that relate to surf, mountain, and outdoor themes. They have news, opinions, stories, videos, art, and partnerships with charities and environmental programs. Whether you want to read about new training equipment, a funky new board shaper, companies that give back/help the environment, new artists on the scene making broken boards into art, or why surfers should train barefoot..(plus many other thought provoking reads)…you’ll find them with the Inertia.
