How to Hang Ten on a Surfboard

What does that even mean, to hang ten?

First of all, hanging ten is a surfing maneuver. It means to get all the way to the nose (front) of the board and let your 10 toes hang off.

It is the absolute most difficult maneuver to do.

So how to hang ten?

Draw a surfboard in the sand, take your toes up to the nose of the board & here we go, you’re hanging ten! Nah, really we all wish it was that easy, but it definitely takes a couple skills.

To start, you can not hang ten on all types of boards. You absolutely need a longboard to do that. By longboard, i mean 9 ft and above. The shorter the board, the harder it is going to be.

Then, you need to be riding down the line, on the open face of the wave. You need to be right in the pocket of the wave. The pocket or the curl means right next to the white water, on the open section. This is the place where you’ll find the most power.

You also need to make to make your way to the nose with style. That’s what noserides are all about, graceful steps & easy looking style. To walk to the nose, you’ll need to do crossteps. You can shuffle or try to run there, but the crossteps will provide you style & fluidity.

Finally, you need to stay high up on that wave, if you’re at the bottom, you’ll go for another epic maneuver called the nosedive. Oh yeah, it takes also a lot of nosedives before you can hang ten.
